Can You Get a Bikini Wax While on Your Period?

Starting your waxing journey is exciting, but common concerns pop up left and right when thinking about how to prepare. We understand that navigating the intricacies of beauty routines can be overwhelming, especially when it comes to timing and comfort. In this comprehensive guide, we delve into the common query – Can you get a bikini wax on your period?

While this situation may seem intimidating, the truth is that your period is a natural part of existing and your esthetician and waxer is often understanding and accommodating. Even so, we’re here to walk you through what to expect during your session and how to best prepare.

Does your period affect a waxing appointment?

Understanding how your period affects the process of getting waxed is the first step to being prepared. Overall, there are two main points to be aware of prior to showing up to your appointment.

Your skin will be more sensitive

First and foremost, be patient with yourself. As if cramps and bloating weren't bad enough, waxing while on your period can result in a higher receptiveness to pain due to estrogen levels. This means that because of your hormones, your skin may be more sensitive and the sting that results with the removal of hot wax from the skin will last just a little longer. Expect redness and irritation following your wax appointment.

Preparation may take a bit more time than usual

More than trying to treat ingrown hairs, having your period during your wax comes with more preparation than normal. Specific pre-care and post-care treatments should be followed for best results. If you’re ever unsure about how to best care for your bikini area, speak with your esthetician beforehand for personalized recommendations.

Common concerns about waxing while on your period

As professionals, there are common concerns we get asked on a regular basis. To save you some time, we’ve outlined the frequently asked questions we get from our clients.

If you’re not comfortable, can you reschedule your appointment?

Feeling comfortable is one of the top priorities here at The Glowthetician. While there’s nothing wrong with getting waxed while on your cycle, if it’s too uncomfortable, or something you’re not ready to experience, there’s no rush!

If you aren’t comfortable waxing on your period, it is recommended to schedule your appointment 5-7 days before the start of your cycle or after your cycle to ensure the most comfort during your service.

Are estheticians comfortable waxing clients when they are on their period?

We can't speak for everyone, but in our experience, most estheticians are completely comfortable with waxing clients who are on their period so long as the proper steps are taken to protect and keep both parties feeling comfortable. Here at The Glowthetician, waxing while menstruating is perfectly acceptable with proper accommodations.

Tips to make your waxing appointment better while on your period

While the idea of getting waxed while on your period may seem intimidating, there are a few things you can do to make your appointment as smooth and comfortable as possible.

Make sure your skin is clean and exfoliated

Whether you’re getting a leg wax, brazilian wax, or a bikini wax, it is important to exfoliate the entire area – even when you’re on your period. As your body navigates the influx of hormones, you’re going to want to mitigate any possibility for ingrown hairs to develop. Heightened estrogen levels can result in thicker pubic hair, making it easier for new hair growth to become trapped beneath the surface of your skin.

Let your esthetician know about your period

Don’t let your nerves get the best of you! It’s always best practice to inform your esthetician about being on your period. More than just for hygiene purposes, this information helps them best care for your skin during your appointment.

A tampon or menstrual cup has to be used, no pads

While it is absolutely fine to be on your period while getting waxed, it is critical that a fresh tampon or menstrual cup be inserted prior to your appointment. Although your esthetician knows that this is just a normal part of being a person, contact with bodily fluids is a health hazard, and also interes with the waxing process.

Drink plenty lot of water before your waxing appointment

Drinking water is going to help with the waxing process. Staying hydrated is going to ensure that the waxing process goes as smoothly and as pain free as possible. It also helps reduce sensitivity, and helps skin stay hydrated, too.

Your esthetician should be experienced

It’s important to solicit the help of an esthetician who is experienced with waxing while on your period, and waxing in general. Since your skin is a little bit more sensitive, knowledge of proper waxing technique and an extra focus on client care is going to make all the difference.
